Demo01
is an unused mission included in Battlezone. It features no gameplay and displays simply a short cutscene.
Details
Demo01's cutscene was, as the name implies, intended to play as an attract to prevent burn-in if the game was left idle on the main menu. It shows a Grizzly and Thunderbolt - the former implied to be the player - assaulting a CCA position defended by two Stolis, a Tusker and Grendel. Amusingly, the cutscene is controlled by the standard AI system and the combat will therefore play out slightly differently every time. The cutscene plays for 55 seconds or until the Grizzly is destroyed (the latter is more common), then repeats.
The map used for demo01
was derived from that used for Tapping the Core and has only a few minor differences (such as the presence of several small lakes and streams). There is an NSDF Lightning Power Plant, Communications Tower and CCA Communications Tower pre-placed to the south of the area where the cutscene takes place, but they never appear on-screen. The player will spawn here if the mission is loaded with the /startedit
flag.[2]
Fate
The addition of animation to the main menu meant an attract was no longer needed to prevent burn-in, so the cutscene was removed. Battlezone: Rise of the Black Dogs uses a the opening clip from Escape from Mars.
